Ambulatory Patients:
Starting Dosage is 10 mg daily. Increases should not be made more than every 5
to 7 days. Prior to adjustments, blood pressure should be measured supine,
standing for 10 minutes, and if possible after exercise. The dosage may be
increased only if there has been no decrease in the standing blood pressure from
the previous measurement.
The average daily dose is 25 to 50 mg
Hospitalized Patients:
Patients in the hospital can be monitored closely, therefore a higher dosage is
possible.
Starting Dosage is 25 to 50 mg and can be increased 25 or 50 mg daily or every
other day if indicated.
Patients should not be discharged from the hospital until the effect of
guanethidine on standing blood pressure is known.
Dosage requirements may be reduced in the presence of fever.
