No deaths due to acute poisoning with reserpine have been reported.
Signs and symptoms may range from drowsiness to coma. Depending on severity, the patient may have flushing of the skin, constricted pupils, respiratory depression, bradycardia, hypotension, hypothermia, increased salivation, increased gastric secretion, and diarrhea.
There is no specific antidote. The stomach should be emptied and the patient is given activated charcoal. Symptomatic treatment and observation for at least 72 hours is indicated. If treatment for hypotension is indicated, a direct vascular smooth muscle medication should be used such as levarterenol, metaraminol, or phyenyephrine.
